Why I hate Facebook

There are a lot of reasons why I enjoy Facebook. Reconnecting with friends. Seeing what people are up to. Looking at pictures of how people have changed. Yes, Facebook is a good thing. However, I feel the need to say that the same reasons I enjoy this site, are the reasons I dislike it. I hate going on the pages of people I grew up around, just to realize that they have left God and want nothing to do with him. I hate learning new and saddening information about old friends who have abandoned their vows, negatively changed their lifestyles, and rejected their spirituality. I despise finding pictures of "Christian" friends getting drunk at clubs or acting in ways that don't reflect Christ. Yes, I will admit... there are times that I do hate Facebook.

Facebook has caused me to lose a lot of respect for people. I hate that. The fact is that Christians are supposed to be different. We just aren't anymore. We're just like everybody else.

Maybe when I click that button and say, "Yes, I'll be your friend," I am thinking about real friendship. Not the kind of friendship that says, "I'm cool with you living in sin, losing your dignity, rejecting your integrity, destroying your relationships, and throwing God under the bus." Maybe to me, friendship is about fighting for people. Maybe friendship to me means that you try to help people when they start to drop off the deep end, even telling them what you are concerned about, knowing that even if they reject your friendship, you tried to be honest with them as a friend would.

We need more actual friends on Facebook. We need more people willing to put their neck out as friends, willing to challenge the system, willing to be brave for the sake of their friends.

I agree. But I have also been pleased to find that some people that I thought would never give their lives to the Lord are now living a testimony.

Thank you so much for sharing the flip side of the argument. Facebook has a lot of positives when it comes to showing us who is in need and who is growing in God. Thank you for your good words!
