They are disillusioned with the path they have been told to walk, and with good reason. What began as a colorful new experience into uncharted territories has resulted only in greater frustration.
The long path has taught them not to trust anyone. Their companions along the way have turned into excess baggage. Their experience has been revealed as a sham.
Ultimately, people today feel duped. Like Dorothy, they have wasted valuable time, just to learn that the secret to life was right under their noses from the start. People feel as if they’ve been lied to by the establishment. “Really, all I have to do is click my heals together? I had the answer all along? Then why exactly did you tell me to walk this path?”
We have learned, it is not the almighty wizard in his grand temple that saves us. The wizard has been exposed. The curtain has been removed and behind it was just an old man with buttons and whistles. The bravery that he offered, the knowledge that he claimed to impart, the heart that he said he could give… these were just parlor tricks, diplomas and pocket watches designed to give a person a warm feeling inside, but never actually fill that empty void deep within one’s chest.
So, people today long for a better place, a simple place. They don’t want emerald cities, they want to go home… back to their black and white lives. The place where people are real. Back to Kansas. Back to where they can consider the only lesson they got on this journey, “There’s no place like home.”
